The London Adult Therapeutic Court was created in June 2007 and it is also referred to as Mental Health Court. The creation of Adult Therapeutic Court was motivated by factors such as the perception of an increased number of mentally disordered accused in the criminal justice system. The Adult Therapeutic Court operates on Wednesdays and follows a therapeutic jurisprudence model rather than an adversarial model.
The Court’s goal is to avoid the criminalization of mental illness and help to prevent re-offending by diverting these individuals out of the criminal justice system and directing them to the proper medical resources. The success of this court is largely, in part, attributable to the close collaboration between the justice sector, health care and social service partners.
Offenders must receive approval to be diverted into the Adult Therapeutic Court. Let us help you navigate through this often confusing time.
