The Direct Accountability Program is a diversion program with a goal of keeping first time offenders out of the prison system. This program is typically available only to adult offenders who have limited or no prior involvement with the adult criminal justice system and who have been charged with a minor offence.
To be considered eligible for the Program the accused must:
Be willing to accept responsibility for the actions that led to the charge.
Be willing to make amends to the community for their offence through an assigned task or “sanction”.
Complete an Agreement, which outlines the terms of the sanction.
The Crown must refer your file to the program and you must then apply and be formally accepted into the Program. By successfully completing the sanction(s) imposed, the charge(s) will be withdrawn or stayed by the Crown.
